Anthony knows the favorite part of my birthday is the cake...I was pleasantly surprised this year.
Anthony & some of the Kappa Deltas made this while I was at work and surprised me with it when I got home.

It's so adorable I don't know if I can eat it!!

(For those of you who haven't seen 'Despicable Me' it's a Minion.)

The Scarlet Pimpernel

Plot summary

Set in 1792, the action takes place during the early days of the French Revolution. Marguerite Blakeney, a beautiful French actress, is married to wealthy English fop Sir Percy Blakeney, and they live in England. The couple has become estranged due to her earlier unintentional denunciation of French aristocrat the Marquis de St. Cyr and his family, which resulted in their being sent to the guillotine. Like many others, Marguerite is entranced by stories of the Scarlet Pimpernel—an anonymous hero who, through a combination of courage and daring, has rescued many aristocrats from Madame la Guillotine, and brought them safely to England. Marguerite's beloved brother, Armand, is discovered to be part of the Scarlet Pimpernel's organization, and he is therefore in danger of being executed. Marguerite is blackmailed by the wily French ambassador to England, Citizen Chauveline (ANTHONY); if she helps him uncover the Pimpernel's identity, Armand's life will be spared. She cannot face the thought of losing her brother, and she hopes that the Pimpernel will be able to save him. She is forced to do as Chauvelin wishes. Contemptuous of her seemingly witless and unloving husband, Marguerite does not go to him for help, and passes along information which enables Chauvelin to learn the Pimpernel's true identity.

When Sir Percy leaves for France, Marguerite discovers, to her horror, that he is the Pimpernel—the man she has betrayed, who had created the persona of a witless fop in order to deceive the world as to his true activities, and who could not reveal the truth to Marguerite because of his belief that she would denounce him to the French revolutionaries. Desperate to make amends for her actions she follows Percy to France to try to warn him. Chauvelin seems close to capturing Percy on several occasions, but the Englishman continues to outwit him, rescuing Armand and the Comte de Tourney, the father of a school friend of Marguerite's. Safely back on board their schooner, the Day Dream, and touched by his wife's remorse, devotion and courage, he forgives her, and the reconciled couple returns to England.

Goonie kids and classic moments

People are always intrigued and think it is so neat how we have this little communication system in the house. Let me tell you, that vent has come in SO handy!! Not only for communication, but warmth. I remember Erica & I cuddled up on top of the one in the front room trying to stay warm waiting for scripture reading time... Dad would get upset the heat wasn't circulating through the whole room, but boy were our buns toasty!!

While Jen's tongue seems to be the focal point, the purpose of the photo is to show her bangs. I was sitting there talking to her and could not keep my eyes off them. :)

My daddy is 69 years young

Dad turned 69 on Friday.
Thursday night I got off work and decided to make a surprise trip to see him!! I LOVE the love when my visit is a surprise :)
Mom made friend chicken & funeral potatoes (oh yes, be jealous! It was superb!) and then it was gift time!!

Can you tell he loves it??
Since it was the day before Dad's actual birthday there was no cake or ice cream, so I'm glad I brought little mini cupcakes for us to sing over.

Conner was out in the other room, so we had a do-over just for him. Such a sweet boy!! I wonder how different our family would be if he hadn't come to ours...

After all the festivities Weston, Kayla, Chris and I went for a midnight swim!! The stars were spectacular and we saw tons of shooting stars... little did we know it was actually the meteor shower!
Back at home we stayed up till all hours of the night reminiscing and catching up. A good night indeed! At the stroke of midnight we pounded on the bathroom door and yelled "Happy Birthday Dad!!" I'm sure he was a little startled, but we couldn't help it!!
The next morning I had a check in at noon so I left around 10:30, but not after having a fun breakfast in the dark cause the power was out!! Now that I think back on it I wish I'd made bread & milk w/ jam in it instead of having cold cereal. Oh well, there's always next time.
Love you Dad!!! Happy birthday!!

This is one of my favorite views in the ENTIRE world. Over the river and through the canyon, around the lake, through the town, around the bend and then.... home.

Visit to the Philippines MTC

I am visiting the Philippines MTC this week. In this artist rendition, the building at the front is the current building with one wing that is one floor and the second wing three floors. The three buildings behind are currently under construction.

This MTC provides training primarily for missionaries called to serve from the Philippines in the Philippines. However, it also provides training for missionaries from surrounding Asian countries (Cambodia, Thailand, Taiwan, Mongolia, Indonesia, India, Pakaistan, Srilanka, etc.). The missionaries here are from Mongolia) These missionareis would have no MTC experience otherwise.

Like at some other MTCs, missionaries at the Philippiles MTC respond to requests to "chat" from non members who while learning about the Church on Mormon.org ask to chat with a member to learn more. These missionareis are in the middle of chatting.

These missionaries just arrived. They are from Taiwan. The one furthest forward and on the left is 6'9"

The three elders at the bottom of the picture who are surrounding a computer monitor deeply engaged in a chat with "Patty" are from Pakistan, India and India (Left to right)

Most missionaries have not received all of the required immunozations before arriving and get them while they are here. Cookie Monster seems to help.

This a the water treatment plant on the site where we are expanding the MTC. If you look closely you can see a yellow hard hat down there. I was thinking, "what if these dirst wall collapse?"

In the foreground is part of the construction project for the MTC expansion. In the background is the skyline of metro Manila.

On the day I visited the construction site there were, are you ready, 236 people working on the site. Here are a few of them.

The unskilled laborers earn $6 per day.

This is one of the three new buildings going up as part of the expansion. We will take the MTC maximun capacity from a tight 80 to a comfortable 140 with room to grow to 280 when needed.

Just like at all MTCs, missionaries get time almost everyday to exercise. We find fewer emotional and physical problems if they get to exercise. The older man in the grey T shirt is the MTC president out mixing it up.

If you though the 6'9" elder from Taiwan was big, check this out. Elder Biscocho from the Philippines and assigned to serve in the Philippines is 7'9". Do you think he might stand out here?

I found this friend just out side the room I was staying in. He is about 2 1/2 inches long and really creepy!

This is Elder Bicosho's district. It included the first ever senior missionary couple to be trained at the Philippines MTC.

This is Elder Dass now serving in Malaysia. I wish I could share with you all of a letter he recently sent to the Philippines MTC president including his encounter with a 12 foot long King Cobra on a dirt path he and his companion were riding their bikes on and their visit to the hut of a "retired" head hunter who showed them his room of trophies (dozens of skulls and about 12 swords with human hair still stuck to the blades). He said that when the retired head hunter had one of the swords in his hands he felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up.
I finally got a picture of lightning it took way to many missed pictures to get this one.

I smashed my finger when we went to get wood. It really hurt

these are all pictures from the family trip to martins cove, and the Willie site also. Perry was supposed to put the video of everyone crossing the sweet water river on the family blog but i dont think he has done it yet.. Hint hint

The beautiful things Heavenly father has put here for us.
